I also lived in the south with parents who not only possessed severe psychological problems, but alcohol addictions as well, so I feel your pain. I worked from the age of 8 repairing TVs to help pay the mortgage so that my sisters and I would have a a place to live. After graduating high school, it became too much to bear, and I left home. My father drifted into severe alcoholism, and mother into dementia. I think one of the primary problems with the both of them was exposure to each other - bad mojo, as it were.

Yet just as I escaped one lot of miscreants, in my late 20's I was done in again by a bunch of white trash southern politicians with the same damned problems -- alcoholism, serial arsonist kids, and pharmaceutical drug abuse.

It is apparently a widespread problem 'round these parts, and some are extremely adept at concealing these issues from the public at large.Dr. Knowhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08035212475787264261noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-829836469690492751.post-15520650209341047742008-07-16T21:46:00.000-04:002008-07-16T21:46:00.000-04:00Jessica: Yeah, believe it or not I actually kept t...Jessica: Yeah, believe it or not I actually kept this story to myself for years after I was old enough to realize who had helped me. Given several reasons of how my family works and the general notion held by most in my family that I'm a little off I never mentioned it.

Randal: Serious, I've come to hate Guitar Hero and all the music associated with it. Yes, I listened to that head banger stuff as a teenager but I had more brain cells then.

Utah: Thank you, yes I will email it to you. It drives me utterly batty to reread something I wrote a while back and find a glaring error I missed. Up until a week or so ago I was rereading Pat Conroy's "Beach Music" and after I heard the interview Ms. Gross did Mr. Spillane I felt the urge to rewrite my lost first version of this post.

engima4ever: Thanks, and welcome. I'm of course talking about Pat Conroy and his great book The Prince of Tides. The book is so much better than the movie, but them I'm assuming you've read Conroy. He's righrt up your alley.

I never read Spillane, not being a big fan of the detective genre, but I might rethink that after this.

Terry Gross is one of my favorites on NPR. Another favorite program for me is This American Life.

Beach you and I have a similar problem as writers. We are good at the story telling, but now our own best editors. If you would email this post to me, I will attempt to suggest little tiny things that might help market it. It just needs a few commas and a bit of grammatical tweeking. I am an obsessive editor of my own work, yet every time, I find mistakes in my own writing, I'd wished someone had pointed out to me. What I love most about your writing is it's emotional honesty. It rings true. This child made the man who wrote this story. It takes courage to be this honest. It's like removing your heart from your chest and offering it to the world.Utah Savagehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16385093247915560752noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-829836469690492751.post-58087921884434210522008-07-15T11:21:00.000-04:002008-07-15T11:21:00.000-04:00Great story! Might be easier to write to Bach instead of Aerosmith. ;-)Randal Graveshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08728992897551848531noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-829836469690492751.post-62060782780509622472008-07-14T21:43:00.000-04:002008-07-14T21:43:00.000-04:00That was a great post. You will get no argument about it from me.

Lime: Funny thing is one of the many reasons I started to blog was as a relief valve over a good bit of the emotional baggage I've been carrying. Sharing wasn't hard, it was digging all the memories out of the dusty corners of my mind. We lived about a year at Murrells Inlet before my mother began a series of cross continent trips to Fort Smith, Arkansas; then to Tulsa Oklahoma a couple of times; and finally a last reconciliation with my dad in Wichita Falls, Texas. Try as I might I can't remember a very good bit of the details of living in those places.

MadMike: When will I quit my day job? I don't know but I must admit to looking into some short story contests and writing some fiction when I get the chance. Spoilboy and his best friend are not helping with Spoilboy needing a good bit of time for his MySpace page and because both of them have taken up with "Guitar Hero" again and it is completely impossible to think while they play that game.Commander Zaiushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11000824454124236774noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-829836469690492751.post-30989350707683528432008-07-14T15:45:00.000-04:002008-07-14T15:45:00.000-04:00Geez Beach! When I was eleven, his books were the first that I felt compelled to read furtively, if not secretively. The best parts were at the end of each chapter, if you get my meaning.

Terry Gross is also a memorable figure.
